Dell did something proprietary to stretch that to 130W on the some of its docks, but you won’t find that elsewhere, in fact most docks don’t even provide the full 100W allowed by the spec.I recently bought a dell XPS L502x, I also had the same problem with the fan speeding up to full speed for a few seconds, then off again, then on again, then off again. The issue with the XPS 15 specifically is that it’s designed for a 130W power source, but the official USB Power Delivery spec maxes out at 100W. The only other solution would be to use an actual Dell dock like the WD19TB. You can avoid that by also connecting the system’s 130W AC adapter, in which case it will draw from that rather than the dock. That’s especially likely when you're using the NVIDIA GPU. It also might be in a location within the system that doesn’t receive a lot of airflow, in which case you’d need more fan speed to achieve a given amount of cooling.Īs for the power issue, be aware that using an undersized power source can cause the system to throttle its performance to try to operate within the reduced power budget. That controller apparently draws quite a bit of power (which is why it’s kept powered off when not needed), and components that draw a lot of power tend to draw a lot of heat. Using any sort of Thunderbolt peripheral activates the system's internal Thunderbolt controller, which is normally kept powered completely off.
